IRISHMAN Damien Leith may be on the eve of releasing his seventh studio album, aptly named Chapter Seven, but he almost feels like it’s his first.
The former Australian Idol winner has chosen to part ways with record company Sony and launch as an independent artist, although stresses the decision was not made lightly.
“My contract with Sony had come to an end and there was another one on the table but I’d been spending so much time in the studio working on all this new material, which was the only thing I wanted to release next,” Leith said.
“It was a tough decision but I’m happy I did it because the creative control has been incredible.
“Working on your own, you can really put a focus on the songs that mean a lot to you.”
The album was recorded in Leith’s studio he built 11 months ago and features 12 original tracks that the Sydney family man said “best represent me today” with influences ranging from Van Morrison to Leonard Cohen.
Two of the tracks were written in collaboration with Joe Melson, the songwriter whose credits include Roy Orbison classics Only the Lonely and Crying.
The partnership formed after Melson heard Leith’s 2011 album Roy - A Tribute to Roy Orbison and invited him to Nashville.
“The two songs we’ve put on the album are the first he has written and released with anyone since the passing of Roy, so it’s an incredible honour,” Leith said.
“He’s become a mentor to me, we’ve written over Skype nearly every week since my visit and I’ve learnt so much from working with him.”
Named after the album’s first single, Leith’s Without A Fight Tour 2013 will kick off in Perth at the end of the month with special guest Andy Brown.
“We’ll do some of the older songs too but definitely play the full new album so people will get to hear them all live and find out what they’re all about.”
