VIDEO: Lucky number seven for Damien Leith
DAMIEN Leith has had seven chapters in the story of his career and his latest album sees him step away from Sony BMG and onto the independent band wagon with his new album, Chapter Seven.
Chapter Seven will be released on Friday under Social Family Records; the result of many months of Leith "stuck" in the studio writing.
“It’s been a long time just on songwriting and nothing else,” he said.
“I got into a head space which was really working for me and the album now represents who I am and where I am at the moment.”
The album sees Leith introduce harmonisers and loop peddles into his music, something which not only makes his album “quite different to the old stuff” but also differs from other live performances he has done in the past.
Preparing for his second performance in Mandurah this year, Leith said the introduction of these new sound technologies will make his weekend performance at the Mandurah Bowls and Recreation Club different from his performance six months ago.
“It’s mainly because I do so much production now,” Leith said.
“And I thought there’s no reason why the technology shouldn’t be integrated into the show.
“I think it’s good for audiences no to hear the same things over again.”
It will also see one of the first performances of what Leith hopes is the beginning of a long-lasting songwriter partnership.
Chapter Seven has the first two tracks co-written by Nashville-based Joe Melson, famed for penning a string of rhythm and blues hits with Roy Orbison.
A strong connection with Orbison, Leith was approached by Melson after his tribute album, Roy, for what would have been the late singer’s 75th birthday.
What began with conversation about the tribute turned into the pair writing some original tracks; a “huge honour” for Leith as it was the first time since Orbison’s death Melson had written with anyone else.
“Since then we’ve been writing over Skype,” Leith said.
“You never know if there will be more to come from us.
“We’ve got a full collection now, so this is just an introduction to what we’ve been working on.”
Damien Leith will be performing with Andy Brown at the Mandurah Bowling and Recreation Club on November 3.
