Koroit Irish Festival lands big names
Jan. 30, 2014, 12:30 a.m.
THE Koroit Irish Festival has landed some big names for its 2014 festival headed by the signing of chart-topping Australian-Irish performer Damien Leith.
Leith has also been announced as the ambassador for the 2014 Koroit Irish Festival, which takes place on the weekend of April 25-27.
Leith shot to fame in 2006 when he won Australian Idol with singing sensation Jessica Mauboy the runner-up.
His debut single Night of My Life reached number one on the Australian charts and was also a top 10 hit in Ireland.
He has released seven albums with two of those reaching the number one on the Australian charts.
Over the course of his decorated career Leith has won an ARIA award and his appearance at the Koroit Irish Festival will be part of a national tour to promote his latest album Chapter Seven.
Leith will perform a show on the Saturday of the festival with the Koroit Irish Festival the first Victorian show of his tour.
His duties as festival ambassador will include presenting the award to the winner of the Australian Danny Boy Championship.
He follows on from the great humanitarian Moira Kelly who was festival ambassador last year and remains as the festival patron.
Another performer who got her break through television, exciting Geelong-based singer Imogen Brough, has also been confirmed for the 2014 Koroit Irish Festival.
Brough was a successful contestant on The Voice and will also perform at the Port Fairy Folk Festival in March.
Koroit Irish Festival president Chris Evans said the line-up of talent on its way to Koroit was huge news for the festival.
"To have someone of the standing and quality of Damien Leith is a coup for our festival," Mr Evans said.
"It shows that we are able to attract some of the best performers of that Irish-Australian genre and that can only help grow our audience.
"And to also have Imogen Brough is fantastic, she will just light up the stage." Singer-songwriter Maria Forde is returning to the Koroit festival, having toured Ireland earlier this year.
Ballarat Irish band The Old Melbourne Road will be making their debut at Koroit.
Also in Koroit for the first time will be Melbourne Indie Irish rock band Zeon who played at the National Celtic Festival in Portarlington last year.
Red Cat will be back after missing last year and Irish rock band Sibin will make the trip again from Mildura.
Local talents Tommy, Tuddy and Mick, Cill Airne, Kayla Dwyer and The Kilmurphys are also included in the line-up.
