Where do I begin? It's lovely to be back here and have a show story to relay, hi to everyone and hope you're all going well
What a fantastic night, definitely one of the best shows and a beautiful end to the tour. It was bittersweet knowing it was an ending but now we’ve got the great news of the play and new album in the new year, all of a sudden there’s some wonderful new things to look forward to!
Damien himself was very excited about it all and both he and Eric were both saying how much they’re looking forward to the album coming out and how well it’s coming along - great news!!! There is a “surprise guest” appearing on the album too so this is all a mystery and cannot wait to see, Damien loves to keep a good surprise for us!
The show itself:
Asquith Leagues is a lovely club. The locals are great and made up a fabulous enthusiastic audience, & it was so fantastic to see Damien there.
The support act Susanna Carter is a real find, she had a beautiful voice and spirit. I reflected on listening to her how as time has passed I’ve gradually entered a different stage of life & I was thinking how lovely her newly emerged vision of what life can be was as she was piecing her thoughts together regarding what life is about and creating songs.
It can be a risk to have a singer unknown to the audience open the show but everyone seemed to really enjoy her music and listened. She mentioned from the stage how appreciative she was of that. Even though the songs were all new to me I really enjoyed them too and was able to get lost into the music she was creating.Would love to have bought Susanna’s EP (if she has one?) but I don’t think she had anything on sale there last night.
Then it was time for Damien! Some of us were lucky to have seen teh Idol a bit earlier, just as we got there for dinner in the bistro he came past so we had a nice little hello beside the fish and chips
. Just love little moments like that they make the night! Enjoyed dinner catching up with Nuffy & her lovely daughter before the show and b/f was most impressed with the amount of prawns he received! (always guaranteed to make his day
)
Damien and Eric were in absolutely TOP form last night, the banter was just hilarious and then, it will never cease to amaze me, he switches to the most perfect singing imaginable. I just don’t know how Damien does that, as he’s always been able to in all these shows over the years.
There were so many amazing moments to this show, it started off rocking into
Mean Woman Blues with an audience singalong which got the room jumping and then it was a brilliant selection of songs from Damien’s catalogue over the years. We were treated to some quite rare songs like
Stay (from Remember June) and
Maybe Someday/Live & Let Die. I Can Stop You Crying was sheer perfection
as was
Halfway Heart. I haven’t seen Damien in concert since last December so it was really great to see how he and Eric are playing the songs from Chapter Seven now, I
love the arrangements.
During the “intimate time” (when Eric leaves) Damien gave us an amazing surprise by bringing back Susanna to do an acoustic duet of
Blackbird, which they did for the first time last night.
Omg, it was just divine and so beautiful to hear Damien do this in person after seeing his lovely version on his facebook/twitter!!! Loved watching how he plays the guitar for this one, he puts his own twist on it while keeping to the spirit of the original, so beautiful!
Damien also mentioned about his recent time in Ireland and recording there, and there will be some beautiful collaborations on the album. He performed
Red is the Rose which was just gorgeous.
Damien also did a beautiful version of
One and Only Mum (Mam) after a lovely introduction speaking about his beautiful Mum.
It’s a song he said he really loves and doesn’t often get a chance to perform, so we were very lucky to also have this rare song last night.
As he was introducing another song Damien was reflecting on how many years it’s been since Idol even though it sometimes doesn’t feel it, by seeing the passing time in how his children are growing up around him. We can see in the setlists the collection of songs he has now reflects all the incredible work done in this time and there’s more than enough to fill any show with great song after great song, and that’s only the originals without even branching into the amazing covers.
I loved that Damien took selections from right across his catalogue last night, it took us into a different era and so many memories each time and got me thinking as he was speaking about the passing years how lucky we’ve been in these years to be able to come and see him and Eric create these magic moments, and how I hope they long continue.
Then, more hilarity!
You just never know what will happen - after a brilliant show, towards the end, Damien started playing the guitar intro for
Kiss (YAY!
) and a girl behind us started singing it really high like Prince (amazing voice, Damien was very impressed!
) and that started everyone off on a roll. It was one of the funniest songs I’ve ever seen Damien perform - while also completely fantastically sung too! He started in on the verse again while Eric was starting the chords and then out of the blue another part of the room chimed in with the really high Prince voice but I’m not sure what bit of the song they were doing, it was
crazy - OMG what was everyone on last night, it was hilarious and brought the house down. Well, that really got Damien going and he launched into the Prince version,
then the
TOM JONES version - yes, Damien actually got possessed by an Elvis/Tom Jones hybrid and I don’t think I’ve ever laughed as much.
The whole audience was in conniptions. After a verse
“full Tom” Damien turned into himself again, then back into Tom, then started singing
Delilah full deep voice!!!
By this time the whole place was on the floor laughing. I’ve never heard anything like it from Damien lol, he was having a blast. Then, just when you think it couldn’t get better he launched into Pusscat Pusscat I love you
(sorry this forum won't let me type in the proper title!!!!) -
the new theme song for Eric (and his gorgeous much loved pet cat & who's almost a star in her own right on instagram!). Straight after all this Damien mentioned the merchandise up the back on sale, which precipitated a frenzied "auction" on stage for the Tea Towels. OMG, I was laughing so much it hurt. Eric was calling the bids at "100 bucks each", Damien was more conservative at .50c, LOL!!!!
There were so many many more moments which the others will all be able to tell, this is just a sampling.
It was such a fantastic night and great also to see everyone again. Eric is also doing a lot of touring with Diana in the new year and dates will be announced soon.
Everyone is really exited about the new year coming with the play and Damien’s new album and there’s lots coming up on the calendar to look forward to, hopefully for a broad area of the country to enjoy! Hope everyone got home ok and has a great week
