Damien Leith has returned to the Sony Music Australia fold after three years as an independent artist.
DAMIEN Leith has been signed to Sony Music Australia again, three years after parting ways with the major label to become an independent artist.
Leith, the Irish singer-songwriter who found fame on Australian Idol, is clearly happy to be back in the fold.
“It feels great,” said Leith, who confirmed to Confidential he has signed a contract for multiple albums with the music giant.
It is nearly five years since Leith revealed he had to sell his car to pay the rent, despite selling $5 million worth of albums after winning the Idol crown in 2006.
That was because in the watertight contract written up by Idol creators 19 Entertainment and the local producers Fremantle Media, they actually owned the rights to Leith’s music performed on the show and released in his best-selling album The Winner’s Journey.
While it caused some understandable bitterness for the ARIA-award winner, he says it had nothing to do with the record company which was then known as Sony BMG (and he went on to make several of his own albums with them).
“It had nothing to do with Sony at the time, it was the makers of the television show,” Leith told Confidential.
Leith admitted it was hard not to dwell on the harsh reality of lost royalties for some time. But after much support from his wife Eileen Stapleton, the pair decided it was time to look forward.
“Eileen and I decided we needed to move on (from it),” Leith said.
The 39-year-old said he had enjoyed his foray into independent music, but there was no doubting the doors that can be opened by such a large label. His album Songs from Ireland will be released on March 13.
Tracks include Leith performing a duet with Bing Crosby (via the wonders of technology) with the full permission of Crosby’s estate.
There were a lot of photos in the article. I will try and edit them in later
