ALBUM REVIEW: DAMIEN LEITH - SONGS FROM IRELAND (2015 LP)
It's almost been 10 years since Damien Leith won our hearts winning Australian Idol in 2006. Since then, the ARIA award winning artist has released 2 novels and 7 albums, and in March 2015, is set to release Songs From Ireland - a celebratory nod to his musical homeland.
While it's not traditionally Irish or Damien Leith-sound (but it's pretty damn close!); it's a harmonious mix of both that will please Damien Leith fans and Irish-music enthusiasts alike.
If you close your eyes and listen to the sounds of the traditional elements: the fiddle, flute, uilleann pipes and bodhran, you can't help but be transported to that local pub, the crashing-shores on a moody Irish coastline, the live band playing in the corner and you, with a pint of ale in your hand.
"Galway Girl" (with Sharon Shannon) and "Rocky Road To Dublin" makes you want to dance. It's a song that promotes the joy and festivity that Ireland is known for. Damien's cover of Ireland's famous "Danny Boy" and "Carrickfergus" is beautifully soulful and heartfelt. While the mellow "Red Is The Rose", "Song For Ireland" and "Raglan Road" allows Damien's vocal control and abilities to shine.
Forgetting the ethical issue with duets featuring those who have passed, "Galway Bay" with Bing Crosby is a beautiful collaboration between the two. It's a different sound than any of the other songs on the album and a nice contrast to moody opener "Black Is The Colour" (with Sharon Corr).
You can tell that he is pouring his heart, soul and Irish pride into every note. It's a more adult sound than previous albums which makes me think this is the type of album that Damien should have recorded straight out of Australian Idol. Yet it's a perfect example of what made Damien such a deserving winner in the first place.
I give fair warning though, listening to this album will make you want to go/return to Ireland. Although, I like to think this more than just an album but as a genius ploy to increase tourism.
Review Score: 8.2 out of 10.
Songs For Ireland is out on Friday, March 13th through Sony Music Entertainment.
