Damien Leith always travels with his guitar.
My best holiday was a trip to see the Northern Lights in Tromso, Norway. My family and I were visiting my family in Ireland and we popped over for a week to Norway. It was truly spectacular, we chased the lights and at around 9pm we saw Lady Aurora make an appearance and dance through the sky in silvery green tones – it was magical and surreal. We did all the touristy things like a husky dog sled ride, whale watching along the Norwegian Fjords and a cable car ride. It's such a magical place and so friendly and picturesque. I've had so many amazing holidays and I really thrive on creating special travel experiences with my family.
The best hotel i've stayed in was the one I proposed to my wife in. We stayed in the Luna Hotel Baglioni in Venice which is right in the heart of the city in San Marco Square. It felt very grand and over the top but perfect for the occasion.
I always travel with my guitar. Inspiration often strikes while travelling.
For a perfect holiday I need my family.
The best piece of travel advice is to do a little bit of research before landing in a new place, know where you are staying, what it is near and know a bit of the local language – a few words to help you get by. Also brush up on the local culture so you can understand and appreciate where you are.
My worst experience on holiday was probably getting conjunctivitis in Varanasi, India. My wife and I had been travelling for about two months around India and then it all got too much, we broke down and got sick and ended up with conjunctivitis. We had to wear sunglasses to dinner, it was that bad.
The biggest packing mistake i've made is packing way too much stuff and then trying to lug it around. You don't need much, especially when you're travelling to a different climate. It's far easier picking up warmer clothes in Europe, for example, than it is trying to buy them here.
On my next trip i want to go to the "real" Disneyland – as in America's Disneyland. The kids did Hong Kong Disneyland and loved it, but my boys are eight and nine now so they want the real deal. However, personally I want to visit South America, Machu Picchu, Bolivia and Brazil. But I'd need at least six months, right?
