Was anyone at Damien's Leadbelly show on Saturday? I didn't see any familiar faces (apart from Damien's!), so I'm guessing not.
It was a really fun show, and it was exciting to see Damien perform in such a small venue with no band, for the first time in ages.
The setlist was very random, and I reckon more than half of the songs were requests from the audience. Damien did very well to play so many requests, and I was really impressed. There were six songs on piano, and the rest were on guitar.
1. Never Forget (happy that he kicked off the show with an original, but I found this choice of opening song a bit strange – I think I'd prefer something like Unless You Say So or Lonely Nights)
2. Crazy Love
3. 22 Steps
4. Only The Lonely
5. Message To My Girl (piano)
6. Beautiful (piano)
7. You Got It (piano)
8. 500 Reasons (the song he wrote with Passenger, not the song from Now & Then)
9. I'll Be Your Baby Tonight (with a cool "trumpet" solo)
10. Raglan Road
11. With Or Without You & Fall At Your Feet
-- Interval --
11. Creep (piano)
12. She's A Mystery To Me (piano)
13. Hallelujah (piano)
14. Babylon (by David Gray)
15. Alone (because I requested it)
16. California Blue
17. If Tomorrow Never Comes
18. One and Only Mum
19. Night Of My Life
20. Tenterfield Saddler
21. Shalala (or Sha la la? not sure about the spelling, but it was a new song he hadn't played live before, which he wrote with Mark Wilkinson)
22. Brown Eyed Girl (the inspiration for the new song)
23. I'll Take You Home Again, Kathleen
24. Crying (with The Lion Sleeps Tonight as an intro, and I always wish he'd sing the entire song when he does that little joke, but he didn't)
25. Take Me Home, Country Road
26. Galway Girl (sort of as an encore, although he didn't leave the stage)
At one point during the show, Damien mentioned playing some new songs (I guess it must've been right before he played the song he wrote with Passenger), and I immediately clapped loudly without thinking, and heaps of people turned around to look at me. So embarro. And then later when D sang the other new song, Shalala, he said to me, "this is a new one for you", and I got some stares again, and my friend who I was with had to pretend not to know me. I guess it's not actually that embarro, though, because Damien loves writing, and I love the songs he writes, so I'm happy to make it clear that I'm a massive fan of his originals.
Anyway, then Damien described the new song and said "sha la la" comes from Brown Eyed Girl, and a whole bunch of people immediately cheered, and Damien said, "no, I'm not singing Brown Eyed Girl", and they were all like "awwww". I don't know why they were expecting that, when he'd clearly just said he was playing a new song. But then he decided to play Brown Eyed Girl afterwards anyway, which was good. The new song was also really good and had this cool sing-along chorus that the crowd got into. I hope he records the song, because I really liked it. And I thought while he was singing it that it sounded a lot like a Mark Wilkinson song, and so after the show I asked him whether he'd written it with anyone, and he said yes and that he wrote it with Mark. So I was proud of my Mark-detecting skills.
I only took one photo (click to enlarge), and it's not a good photo at all, but I thought people might want to see his outfit. He had some rips in the knees of his jeans which he kept making jokes about throughout the night.
