Hello Damien,
Where do I begin? I've wanted to say something to you for so long, but when it comes to saying it, I'm not sure exactly what it is to say. You're fantastic, it's true, but to say something like that seems pointless when so many people have said it already, however true it is. Everything I think of to say, every compliment, falls rather short of who you are. Allow me to at least try. I know it is impossible for you to read every message your many well-wishers send you, but if you ever feel down, if you ever happen to look over the list of messages people have sent you, know at least that I am one more well-wisher amongst thousands, and that I am thinking of you and hoping for the best for you.
The wonderful thing about Idol is how close it brings you to the contestants. Normally I never bother to find out about musicians, I just take their music for granted. But the thing that struck me first was what a friendly, good-humoured, genuine guy you seemed to be. That was when I saw you for the very first time in the early auditions, and I hoped to dear God that you could sing as well.
And boy, can you ever!
It's been amazing to watch you. You are so dedicated - it's great to see a serious artist, not a reality TV contestant, on this program. I don't know enough technically about music to give your voice the compliments it deserves, so instead, let me say that there will never be a voice - or a person - quite like you on the show again. Anyone who watches you cannot help but be charmed by your brilliant personality.
You're not an obvious choice for the Australian Idol. As much as I believed in you from the start, I was amazed that so many other people got behind you as well. Through Idol, and through you, I have met some lovely people, from teenagers to grandmothers, as close as a few suburbs away or as far away as Ireland. What brings them together is you - they all support you. We have been honoured to have at the head of our community at first you yourself, then your lovely wife Eileen who has been brilliant to share you with us, and even, sometimes, we have been visited by darling little Jarvis.
The best type of music is that which brings people together despite their age, race, sex, or social demographic. It takes someone very, very special to unite a nation, and indeed nations. Australia and Ireland are very proud to be associated with you. And in that respect you are perhaps the first - and possibly last - true Australian Idol, someone who can unite people and inspire them to overcome their differences. So many people have been touched by your music, the story of you and your family, and by you yourself with your irresistably lovable personality. That fact that so many people are interested in you, and chose you as our Idol, is a credit to us as a nation. Regardless of any announcements made at the opera house to the contrary, you truly are our idol.
Cheers, good luck, and take care. My best wishes to you and your family, and I hope the outcome of Idol takes you where ever you wish to go. If nothing else, I am thankful to have met so many lovely people through Idol, and to have become aware, perhaps in a way met, you and your family.
