D helped me through it today - a cheesey story!

I know this is a waste of a thread, and I've probably bumped some vital info off the first page here....

but I just wanted to tell you a leeetle story...


Today was the first time I have driven a car since I started watching Idol. I had a big ole car accident in early August, that left my car a total write-off and me quite shaken.

I havent had a car to drive since then, though I will confess when offered one to borrow I have always declined. I'm a little freaked out about the whole 'get behind the wheel of a tonne of fast moving metal and stay between the lines' concept now, and the longer I left it I think the worse it was getting...


So today I could avoid it no longer...I had to hire a care and drive around for most of the afternoon doing some long put-off work related errands.


To say I was tense and anxious is a bit of an understatement...I was on the verge of tears for the first hour at least.
I had the car radio playing, which was a weird experience anyway as my previous car (RIP) had no radio, and I have no radio at home...
Some guy pulled out suddenly in front of me and I had to hit the brakes at reasonable speed. Nothing too extreme, but in my state it just about sent me over the edge....

...and then would you believe it, NOML came on the radio! Seriously, right at the moment I'm about to pull over and abandon the vehicle!
And you know what...I just started laughing! I couldnt get the smile off my face. I must have looked a right idiot, I'm driving down the road, crying, but grinning and singing along OUTRAGEOUSLY badly, doing the daggy drumming on the wheel and the rest....

I still cant believe how quickly my state of mind changed just by hearing D. The power of music at work, eh?

The rest of the afternoon went swimmingly, and I felt very relaxed behind the wheel. Even after the song, when some yob caller and the snarky DJ started to bag NOML, I didnt care. I was just so thrilled to be hearing D, in my life.

wow winter, that's a great story, I've had to go through a similar experience a while back, not with a car, but it was the same thing of having to go through that wall of fear - good for you for getting back on the horse again! (or camel, as the case may be )

What a beautiful bedtime story (not the car accident bit, but the overcoming your fears bit)...Good for you Winter. That's a real heart-warmer. You should be very proud of yourself and don't worry about bumping other threads - your story is well worth it.

Awwwwwwww first of all I want to give you a big hug Winter. Secondly I want to give you a huge pat on the back for even getting behind the wheel of the car today - that took a lot of courage. You are so strong. And thirdly ...... how heartwarming is that, that D was there for you right in your time of need. That's such a touching story. It sounds like you took a huge step today and are on the road to overcoming your fear of driving.

Shimmery I think it's great too that you faced your fear.

Please give both of yourselves a big pat on the back from moi. I'm proud of you both!!!

Hi Winter, What a nice story. It must have been so hard for you to get back in the car again. I have a friend who was in a very bad accident 2 years ago, and has never driven since. Well done of you for overcoming your fears.

I had a bad car accident where I ended up with a broken neck and was off work for a year. (Someone hit me from behind doing 80k when I was stopped at a traffic light) I was nervous driving again after that, but downright terrified of anyone who followed me too closely! All these years later, I can still have bad days.

Do keep driving if you can now that Damien has broken the drought! (the power of love indeed:)

I am having a bit of a 'proud of myself' moment..now I know I can still do it! All I have to figure out now is how to replace the car...




You know, I have another "D helped me through" story..quite a big one actually compared to this little tale.

I've been umming and arrrring about writing it for a while, and I was contemplating posting it if D didnt win...just to let him know what he has done!
I think I will post it soon..maybe in a few weeks time once things have...developed...a little more.


I wonder how many other folk here have similar stories regarding their D on Idol experience?

I will try to keep driving, but no car and no access to one....


I cant imagine how scary being hit at 80k would be...my collision was under 60k...I believe I was braking at the time (cant remember!). My injuries were so very light, but I still cant believe that my neck will ever feel right again...

Good for you getting back on the horse, wintry..had similar experience myself once..That was pretty awful for you, too christyl..a word I like is synchronicity..the Universe conspires..(The Alchemist, anybody?)..but it's still kinda spoookkky..!

You had bad whiplash, did you, Winter? Do you have a really good physio, who has given you exercises to strengthen it again? That made all the difference to me. I had been off for 10 months and my neck was even weaker (was in a brace for 4 months, and didn't get strength back)...then I went to a different physiio, and was back at work within 6 weeks. It can be so frustrating, if you are used to an active life...really drags you down. I know how you feel.

I would love to hear your other D story! Maybe we should start a thread, "D stories that change a life"..or something like that?

*hugs* What a fantastic story, particularly the happy ending. I've been involved in a few near-accidents, but never anything severe, so I can't even imagine how frightening it would be to have to get back out there.

You know, I bet between us we probably have (or will have) enough touching Damien stories to write a book. ^_^
