I've so been waiting for this thread! I love it! Just look at him go, he's a little energetic dynamo! The atmosphere was absolutely electric, he had everyone - except the judges - on their feet! I never realized until then just how well he could connect with a crowd - having seen him live, I now know he is fantastic at getting people involved in everything he performs. A little cringe-worthy perhaps, a little hammy, but disco's supposed to be. I think Damien had the best understanding of genres out of all of them - High and Dry was far more big band than anything anyone else did. And at least something negative had a positive counter-reaction - I believe Andrew G actually swore after the judges' comments, and I think everyone realized just how important it was that he stayed in the competition. Besides, how can you really get to know someone without seeing their bad side? At least he never failed in a technical aspect - all his notes were spot on! And I think his dancing his brilliant! ;D The man has rhythm and can groove - he proved it by partying at the arias!

I know I wouldn't mind dancing with him haha! Celebration!! When I found out I was excited - when the first performer came out and sang i though 'Oh boy', Lisa sang i though 'Ahh crap!' and then Damien sang and I though 'YEA!! FINALLY TRUE DISCO!!!' and then came the judges comments!! No matter how much the judges suck up to Damien now I won't forgive them! He got the crowd moving which I though was fantastic! His vocals were better than everyones (although I though Ricky's were brilliant too). I thoughrally enjoyed it! Dance moves in all - and I will admit this - yes I am dorky - I jump around with him haha!!! *is embarrassed*. Hmmm I hope we can persuade D into singing this at the live performances ;D

Yeah... I hope he does perform it again, even if it's with a drastically changed arrangement and delivery. It may not have been up there with his absolute best performances, but what I love about it is that he approached it with the same enthusiasm and energy he brings to all of his performances. He never gave anything less than 100% over the course of the show (and sometimes gave a lot more!), and I think Celebration is the performance that made everyone realise that.
And sure, perhaps he doesn't move like Guy or Anthony or Dean on stage, but I personally really enjoyed seeing him up there getting into it in his own way. Who says all singers have to move in a particular way on stage? If you look at Robbie Williams, he doesn't care about looking dorky on stage - he skips and dances and does whatever the heck he feels like, and his fans love him for it. I think people respond to singers who go wherever the music takes them and don't let themselves be inhibited - the audience certainly responded to Damien on disco night! I doubt Damien will be doing much disco in the future, but I hope he always feels that he can do whatever it is he wants to on stage.
Now that Idol is over and the pressure is off, I love watching Celebration on the Winner's Journey DVD. Damien looks great and he performed a song that I personally hate in a way that actually made me like it a little.
And no, he did not deserve to be spoken to the way he was on that night. Especially not when the previous year Mark gave Lee Harding a freaking touchdown for bouncing around the stage in the same way every week.

The only two reasons I have for 'appreciating' Celebration is for the effect it had on Damien's subsequent performances and the galvanising of Idol-watchers' opinion that he was extremely talented and needed saving after his dissection by the judges. Damien used the criticism to crystallize his approach to the competition and thereafter performed songs that had meaning for him, without regard to what the judges may be expecting. It was the turning point in the competition for him. The outrage at his harsh treatment after Disco night*uuurrrrgh* showed that the public would not tolerate such appallingly nasty commentary and that they saw Damien's potential and would not allow him to be eliminated. As far as the performance went, I thought it was fine vocally, and he did have the crowd up and dancing, but I still can't bring myself to watch it again.Brings back unpleasant memories..however, it may just become D's 'Sadie the Cleaning Lady' a la John Farnham. LOL!

Well I for one don't understand why his performance of this song has copped such a beating. Yeah so what he jumped around a bit. His enthusiasm got everyone up on their feet dancing and enjoying the song. His vocals were fantastic as always I only have one thing to say to mark and kyle shame on you!

Perhaps they were so harsh because his other performances were just so spectacular that he raised the bar high above Celebration, and therefore they criticised it even though it wasn't that bad? Who knows how those guys think? The only reason he has such a complex about it is those blasted comments! If certain performers low beneath Damien's levels had managed a connection with the audience like that, Mark and Kyle would've been in raptures! I don't know about anyone else, but I was sunk very low in my seat that night during Heart of Glass. Ewww!!!

While I think Mark and Kyle treated him unfairly, I do agree with Mark that it was strange and bizarre, but I was kinda expecting it to be (so did Marcia I think given her pre-song comments). However, I also think that the performance was very endearing and vulnerable, and that he wouldn't have lost any fans because of it, and may have even gained some. I agree with others too that it turned out to be a good thing - a counterpoint for his other performances - he really timed his run and chose his songs superbly. While his was a little strange, Heart of Glass was really trainwreck territory, yet it didn't get the same treatment from the judges - maybe that was a good thing too! Damien should look back on Celebration with fondness I think, as should we.

He'll only get better & better as he does it more & more as a 2nd encore at his live shows!!! The audience will totally go wild...!! OR...knowing D...he'll slip a chorus of Celebration into an arrangement of some other beautiful song as a total teaser for the audience...
