Well done OzL. Get them all in one at a time. I think my other half has given up because he knows he's not in the race. He puts up with my 'obsession'. I made hubby watch it today on tele. He did agree that it was a good version. (He wasn't game to say anything else).

Aaargh! I have it playing on a continuous loop in my head! I watched all my tapped footage from Idol today too, and it didn't get rid of it! I totally don't get this song, the lyrics are....um...pretty left-field. But I can't get his voice out of my head, he made it sound so beautiful! I was walking along a bushtrack today and thinking of it, I felt very Aussie! I was tempted to burst into song, but my mum was with me, and I would've been embarassed if other walkers suddenly came round a bend and heard me! ;D

Hi hyperunne Aaargh! I have it playing on a continuous loop in my head! I watched all my tapped footage from Idol today too, and it didn't get rid of it! I totally don't get this song, the lyrics are....um...pretty left-field. But I can't get his voice out of my head, he made it sound so beautiful! ;D Damien's rendition of the song was for me also, truly beautiful and deeply soulful. While I have always loved this song, and knew sketchy details of Peter Allen's life story, Damien made the story in the lyrics come alive for me and it was as though I was hearing it for the first time. The song is an autobiographical tribute to his Grandfather George Woolnough, penned and sung by Peter Allen Woolnough. George owned the Tenterfield Saddlery from 1908 - 1960 when he retired ...."52 years he sat on his verandah and made his saddles" George's son married and "had a war baby" - being Peter "Something was wrong and its' easier to drink than go crazy" - Peter's dad it is reported was an alcoholic. "and if there were questions about why the end was so sad George had no answers about why a son ever had need of a gun" - Peter's dad shot himself. "Grandson of George has been all around the world......changed his last name" - Peter dropped the Woolnough and became Peter Allen. ".... and he married a girl with an interesting face" - Peter married Liza Minelli ( they separated 1969 the year her mother Judy Garland died, and divorced 1974) "He'd almost forgotten them both" - his dad and grandfather "because in the life that he leads,There's nowhere for George and his library or the son and his gun,To belong, Except in this song" - Peter's tribute to his Grandfather the Tenterfield Saddler. Hope this helps Hyperunne, and if please feel free anyone to add to or correct the above.

A good read, greenleith.
My mum, sister and I went to see The Boy From Oz last year (and LOVED it!), and it wasn't until Damien sung this song that Mum and I *really* listened to the words and "got it". I love a song with a great story, and having seen the musical made it that much easier to follow and understand.

Thank you Greenleith. I had an idea what the song was about but you have filled in all the gaps for me. I wonder whose idea it was for Damien to sing this song - it was the perfect choice for him!

I Just will add that this - Peter's life was certainly an interesting one, it was actualy Judy Garland that discovered Peter Allen when he was performing in Hong Kong. Peter died in 1992 (far too soon).......... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Allen

I heard Peter Allen's version on the radio today! Let me say this: Damien's version is far superior, in my opinion! Damo is making quite a habit of outdoing these musical legends.

Thanks greenleith, that makes a lot of sense now! I didn't realize Peter had a family connection and wrote himself into the song, the song means a lot more when you know the backstory! I agree about the originals! I can't listen to Wicked Game or With or Without You any more even though I loved the originals first, just because they seem so bland in comparison now! I heard the original MTMG on the radio for the first time and went "Hey it's Damien! Hang on...that's not Damien!"

Thanks so much for that background Greenleith!! I love Damien's version, it brings it to life even more for me which is the case with so many of his cover versions.
It's amazing to me - I LOVE the originals of MTMG & Wicked Game - and now I listen to Damien's versions in preference. Consdiering how great the originals are, that's just incredible - I noticed a comment here about the tenderness he gives Tenterfield Saddler and I heartily agree - there's a quality of putting the emotion into the song which really sets Damien's songs apart.

I agree with u Ozlander, I love Tenterfield Saddler, listen to it all the time. I think he should sing it at his Melbourne Concert.
