Hi hyperunne
Aaargh! I have it playing on a continuous loop in my head! I watched all my tapped footage from Idol today too, and it didn't get rid of it!
I totally don't get this song, the lyrics are....um...pretty left-field. But I can't get his voice out of my head, he made it sound so beautiful! ;D
Damien's rendition of the song was for me also, truly beautiful and deeply soulful. While I have always loved this song, and knew sketchy details of Peter Allen's life story, Damien made the story in the lyrics come alive for me and it was as though I was hearing it for the first time.
The song is an autobiographical tribute to his Grandfather George Woolnough, penned and sung by Peter Allen Woolnough.
George owned the Tenterfield Saddlery from 1908 - 1960 when he retired ...."52 years he sat on his verandah and made his saddles"
George's son married and "had a war baby" - being Peter
"Something was wrong and its' easier to drink than go crazy" - Peter's dad it is reported was an alcoholic.
"and if there were questions about why the end was so sad George had no answers about why a son ever had need of a gun" - Peter's dad shot himself.
"Grandson of George has been all around the world......changed his last name" - Peter dropped the Woolnough and became Peter Allen.
".... and he married a girl with an interesting face" - Peter married Liza Minelli ( they separated 1969 the year her mother Judy Garland died, and divorced 1974)
"He'd almost forgotten them both" - his dad and grandfather
"because in the life that he leads,There's nowhere for George and his library or the son and his gun,To belong, Except in this song" - Peter's tribute to his Grandfather the Tenterfield Saddler.
Hope this helps Hyperunne, and if please feel free anyone to add to or correct the above.
