I really like what I've heard of Who You Are - it's been stuck in my head all afternoon.
*can't wait till it's released*

Great to hear something new from him ;D I think I have vertigo and don't realize it - I get dizzy on the high notes

The EP version - finally on sale The opening notes of the EP version of "Who we Are" came as a surprise having heard it acoustically previously in the video blog. The heavier guitar section of studio version reminds me of Elvis Costello's "Blood & Chocolate" and though the changes and sudden traffic lights through the rhythm threw me off guard and I'm not used to Damien's voice being so inside the mix of the general production, I'm jumping in to go with the flow of this unexpected sound!! It's early stages for me with this song to fully feel it's pulse but I'm fascinated with a sound I wasn't anticipating. The final chiming notes so reminiscent of "Unforgettable Fire"/ "Electrical Storm" leave me wanting to go back and discover more paths through this song. I loved the earlier acoustic version & want to listen more and start to discern the subtleties of this much different version. Really really loving all the songs Damien is releasing just now, they all have immediate appeal and then have so much depth as well. Plenty to appreciate and enjoy here which is the mark of classic music that will last and be remembered long into the future!

I'm with you Shimms. I've been listening to ISMU and WYA and love them both big time.

I'm quite suprised, but WYA seems to be the song off the iTunes EP that I'm listening to the most!
Right when it started my immediate thought was "oh, this would be the compulsory generic track necessary on these releases", but I soon realised it was more...and yes, I'm hearing a bit of Unforgettable Fire/U2 as well, its in the guitar I think, combined with the falsetto (says she who knows little about music!).
As I'm listening to it it occurs to me that perhaps it is its anthemic quality that appeals - many of my other favourite artists songs do too (U2, Arcade Fire etc)?

Winter. You've certainly got a better understanding of music than me but I LOVE WYA. Thx for the great review!

I've loved Who You Are since I heard it in the video blog, and ever since Damien said he recorded the B side version in Ireland, I expected it to sound similar to the Re:Leaf songs we've heard off their website, and it does. I've only listened to the recorded version once so far (been too busy reading Harry Potter) and it's really good. (I was dancing to it, haha.) I laughed at the start of it when it's all loud and rocky and then you hear Damien start singing really softly.

I think there is that anthemic quality for sure in this one. I kept hearing elements of U2s Electrical Storm and some of the later work of that era too in the instrumentation and went back yesterday to listen to the William Orbit mix of that song, and yes, it shares that similiar driven pace and fullness of sound.

Got my signed single today!!! I love this song, it sounds so...well-rounded if you know what I mean. All the elements are well-combined, it's a very finished-sounding song. Darren's drums are great, and the vocals are brilliant of course! ;D The lyrics are great too, you can really hear the experience in them, like Damien's looking back at who he used to be, as a person and musically. Thematically it's very introspective, like These Days, which I also love. I love the slightly amped-up rock sound too, great to hear! ;D Electrical Storm? I'll have to listen again and see if I can hear it!

I really love this one too! At first, like you said Shims, having Damien's voice coupled with that kind of instrumentation threw me off a bit, but once I got used to it I really got into the song. The lyrics actually took me several listens to grasp (meaning-wise, I mean; the words sounded perfectly clear!), but now I've got the gist of them I find the song as a whole really intriguing.
Definitely feeling the U2/anthemic vibe of the song everyone else has mentioned. I think if this song is played at the concerts it would really go off. And I love the way Damien delivers the lyrics, sort of throwing 'em out there. We all love the more acoustic stuff, but I love those reminders that he's equal to a big rocking number as well. ;D

I love this song. I've found that I'm listening to this the most from the single - maybe because it's new? Anyways, I think it is really well done, and I'm glad that it's there, and hopefully it is on the the play list at the concert and that I get to go

Wow, I love this song...have yet to get my hands on the single (it seems most of the music places near work are not associated with Aria). mmm did anyone else notice in the blog, what lovely piece of work is in the background?
