*butts in rudely and belatedly*
Well the show has FINALLY finished here over in the west...and you should all be in bed. My opinion on the evening, just so you can relive it all blow by blow? Well, objectively, I think they came out about even. Subjectively, D wins hands down of course. Gosh, that Jess Idol journey clip will push the right buttons with a lot of the public. Damo's got his work cut out.
Performances: 1. Jess singing Idol song. Well after spraying a mouthful of wine over the coffee table after the second line (damn you drinking game), I quickly recovered...and then wished I hadn't. I think this is possibly the worst Idol schmultz in four years of puss-filled vomit from Sony/BMG. What an utterly nauseating load of codswallop. Jess did a great job, given the circumstances.
2. Damien singing Alex Lloyd. Rocky, did a great job. Nothing stellar though *ducks incoming tomatoes*. I think this is the style he wants to play so it was probably a good choice.
3. Jess singing Impossible. Nailed it! Just lovely, and her best of the season I reckon, after "Beautiful(?)" (aka the jelly-belly song)
4. Damien singing Ben Harper. Wonderful wonderful wonderful. Swoonfest from start to finish. Better than the original. Just gorgeous.
5. Jess singing Janet Jackson. She is sooo bubbly and nice, what a wonderful smile ;D. Her low notes weren't there, and she didn't quite hit it, but she looked radiant.
6. Damien singing maggot-infested Idol single. Well...he managed to make something out of it after all. Fantastic arrangement (although there were one or two 'unusual' notes that I'm not convinced were intended, but maybe that's just me). Lyrics were mind-numbing drivel, but if you blocked them out it sounded goood. Really quite good.
A quick visit to another forum I frequent, where support is about 50/50 for both, the consensus is that Damien should win so they're not subjected to Jess' version of the single ever, ever again.
I did find it strange that they chose a porn star to co-host tonight's show though.

I loved Damien's version of Never Meant To Fail, absolutely brilliant! I don't particularly like Ben Harper's version of Waiting On An Angel but when I heard Damien sing it tonight, he blew me away! He put a whole new meaning into that song and it was delicious.
When I heard Jess sing Night Of My Life I thought "here we go again, another naff Idol song." No disrespect to Jess, I think she's gorgeous and has a brilliant voice but the song is ordinary. I couldn't wait to hear Damien's version, I just knew that he would work his magic with it and he certainly did that!
It was so nice to watch both Damien and Jess sing for us tonight without the pressure of being judged. They both seemed so much more relaxed than usual even though they're facing the big one next week at the Opera House.
Congratulations to both of them for coming this far but I just keep hearing the words in my head over and over again "And the winner of Australian Idol 2006 is...................Damien Leith!"

Brilliant performances tonight. Never Meant To Fail, loved that he rocked it up a bit.....better than the orginal.....love that man with a guitar haha. Waiting For An Angel.....this was probably my fave performance of the night, breathtakingly stunning. Winners single (forgot the name lmao).....loved Damien's version of this song. I actually don't really like the song, well not Jess version anyway...it's the same type of lame idol song as every other year...but i loved what Damien did with this song, he really got the best out of it.....his voice made it 10 times better lmao.
Ange xo

Oh, it's a Damien high we're on for sure. Three songs in one night is clearly too much for some of us to take. ;D I think it's bedtime for me too but before I go, I'm going to say again, having listened to it again, the winner's song really sucks this year. Possibly even more than "Listen With Your Heart", and that's saying something. It's so ordinary as a ballad that if Jess's version is the one that gets released, I will probably buy it and chuck it on the shelf without bothering to ever play it. Nothing against Jess, but the arrangement didn't work for me, and I really hope she doesn't have to release that as her debut single because it will plague her for the rest of her life. I noticed Damien had a few off notes here and there too, but it didn't bother me - Jess has sung a whole song off-key before without attracting comment from the judges, so it was all fair in love and war to me. I never felt the need to cringe at the off-ness of it. I think he's just so in pitch that we notice immediately when he's even a little less than that. His performances were spot on for me - one fantastically edgy and one heart-rendingly sweet - and I think he made excellent song decisions given the kind of voters he needs to draw in. The winner's song was brilliant - it might as well have not been the same song. Hearing that just confirmed for me that Damien is the one who can best make use of the winner's contract. He truly made lemonade out of a lemon tonight and as much as Jess claimed to love the song... she can do so much better. Damien has made it so much better. Not saying this just because I want Damien to win either. I seriously wonder if Jess really loves the song as much as she said she did, or if she just said it because... well, she could hardly say if she hated it could she? I realised tonight, and am going to publicly admit here, that I am hopelessly in love with Damien's voice. Which is a fairly doomed sort of love, given that he kind of... carries it around with him, and whatever relationship that could possibly work out between the two of us would probably not be highly endorsed by Eileen. It's just... a beautiful, perfect thing. And given that my mother was just dancing up and down the hallway singing, "All I want for Christmas is Damien," I think she would be all for this unrequitable love of mine. She might even prove to be my biggest rival. Anyway, I shall now (well... in about half an hour probably, at the rate I'm doing things while in Damien-thrall) retire to my bedchamber to pine (O! Beautiful instrument!), and come up with another essay on this, my favourite topic, tomorrow. If I don't sleep now my hands will be shaking too much to punch buttons tomorrow. And that's going to be an important theme of this next week. Punching buttons. 1...9....0....2........5.....5.........5.....5.......6....2..... *ahem* No subliminal messages here...

kami, I think a beautiful voice is a spiritual thing, we all respond to it's beauty because it is *of* beauty. And to love and recognise beauty in all its forms is a wonderful thing

I thought there was a few notes in the winners single that he didn't mean to do aswell. I'm sure the recorded version will be much better. Jess's version was boring but I really liked Damo's (even thought I can't remember what it was called ) I didn't like Waiting On An Angel much at all when Ben Harper sang it but D's version was so much better. The one I watched of Ben singing it he didn't really connect with the audience at all, I think that's why I didn't like it and it was much slower (and it wasn't Damien singing it ;D) Never Meant To Fail was so much rockier than what he normally does and he looked like he really had fun with it. Do they sing 3 diff songs again at the opera house? I hope he does another rockish song if they do.
