I thought those comments over Celebration were way way over the top. It wasn't his best performance - but it was okay. It wasn't even cringe worthy and they made those comments.
And what did everyone think of all those Val Doonican comments Mark kept making. Now I used to watch the Val Doonican show when I was a little kid - and I certainly can see no comparision whatsoever - apart from the fact that they are both Irish - so I think the comments were more racist than anything.

I was totally gob-smacked by the judges reaction to Damien's Celebration performance. The way Damien bopped away and had fun with it was the very spirit of disco itself and the audience were getting into it too from what I could see. I was devastated by Mark and Kyle's insults. Totally unwarranted. As to the Val Doonican analogies from Mark. I can assure him that Val Doonican never inspired me in any way as compared to what Damien does to me.

I haven't bought the Final 12 DVD yet and wondered how bad was his audition was. The one that I remembered for his first audition was Mark calling him an 'ugly bastard and Bog Irish'. Surely Mark and Kyle did not throw other insults apart from that. And how about their comments later in Top 100 onwards? How did Damien react to that?

I agree with everything that's been said here in regard to Mark and Kyle's rudeness and cruelty to Damien. I really felt for Damien at his audition and that hurt look on his face will be burned into my mind forever but since then I've just loved watching his determination and positivity each week. He had that "I know something you don't know" air about him. It was as if he were saying "You ain't seen nothin' yet." with that twinkle in his eye. And man, did he show them exactly what he's got and who he is! Damien answered his critics by winning Australian Idol, that to me is divine justice!
Mark Holden is a tool, always was, always will be and Kyle is his lowly apprentice! They are the adult version of the schoolyard bully and I use the term 'adult' loosely. They probably thought that Damien being Irish and a 30 year old to boot gave them license to take the piss out of him without realising that this 30 year old Irishmen has feelings just like anyone else!
Hey, but it's all good. Damien won and I for one think he's bluddy bewdiful ;D

Hi Janny, Unfortunatley there was more on the final 12 DVD than was previously shown on TV. Mark referred to him as Bog Irish, Butt Ugly, Ugly Bastard, and that he couldn't keep looking at him because he was so ugly!! As, I said before - Shocking!! Kyle also had a fair bit to say about his teeth - calling him a hill billy, and commenting that at 30 he probably wasn't going to get much better! As someone said earlier, Mark and Kyle acted like two school yard bullies - totally unfair to comment on someone's looks, when it is not something that they can readily change! Bring back Dicko - although he was cutting, he was definitely funny and you could see that all the top 12 thought a great deal of him. Even when he commented to Paulini about that dress, he did it in a fairly diplomatic manner!

Noooooo Waaaayy!!! * wants to run off and hug Damien real tight and tell him how much I love him*I haven't seen the DVD - I only know what I saw during the series. OMG - that's awful I say sack the two of them. They are a couple of immature bullies btw I thought Dicko's comment to Paulini was appropriate and tactfully put

I would love to see Dicko back, his best tv was definitely on Idol.
In fairness Mark did Damien a favour. I was so incensed by what he had said that I think I would have supported Damien from that time on no matter what.....fortunately he is a genuine talent. If someone had said that to me, I would have crumbled, gone home and cried myself to sleep and then sunk into a deep depression and probably never given a toothy smile again (but thats just me). It bothers me because if Mark had any basis to say it (which in this case he didn't) - even if you seriously think they are ugly - it's just wrong, there are better ways to tell someone you don't like the way they look (actually no there isn't - it's just wrong).
crazylinlove, this really got to me at the time too - I think a lot of people felt for Damien and wanted to see him do well after such comments. Yes, he showed very impressive dignity.

What they showed on TV was bad enough, but this is so much worse. Makes me admire Damien even more, if that's possible. I wonder if the full audition will be on next weeks DVD or if they'll censor it as it makes Kyle and Mark look very stupid. The Australian public knew talent when they saw it and treated certain judges with the contempt they deserved.

I've liked Damien before I even heard him sing. I really liked the look of him and his manner, so I prayed to god he was a good singer - and was he ever! I think that shows that Damien can't be that ugly, if I liked him even before I heard his voice - that just cemented the deal! I must have liked the look of him and his personality, since I didn't start liking him only when he had sung. Personality in an under-rated virtue on Idol. I've never taken any notice of anything Mark says. He goes in with an idea of who he thinks the idol should be, and he endorses that person relentlessly and won't change his mind. I think he wants to take credit for picking the winner and giving them his 'patronage'. But even though he though Damien wouldn't win, he had to admit he had a good voice, since he gave him a record-breaking number of touch-downs. (notice he pulled back the week after that?) And Kyle is just Kyle. I don't think he was prejudiced towards Damien like Mark is, but he likes to insult everyone, given any excuse, to make the viewers notice him and make out he's the 'mean' one. Kyle is the school bully. Mark is the kid who agrees with the bullies in order to be cool. That's worse, because while Kyle may pick out genuine flaws and exaggerate them, Mark just makes them up to sound good. Which makes Damien the kid who underwent the bullying, then left school to become a great success and laugh in the faces of the bullies. Did anyone notice the judges' reactions to him winning? Kyle looked like his usual self. Marcia looked like a proud parent. Mark looked...disgruntled, even though he was smiling. He leant over and said something to the other two. Probably "told you so". @#$&$#%#. I'm glad Damien won - it throws it back in their faces. But he's too nice to be spiteful. I'd really like to see the judges - or at least mark - with Damien in an interview.

I'd just like to know if Mark ever apologised to Damien for those comments - if he's got any credibility he should have

Apologise? I bet he didn't. I bet he thinks it's quite appropriate to call a lovely young man ugly just because he doesn't find him attractive.
That's the part of these kinds of shows that I hate - where they imply that it's okay to say whatever you like about another person, so long as you think you're right.

Sometimes *crouches to wait for flying objects* I get the impression that Mark says certain things to make people go home and think about stuff and push themselves to the next level. Still no reason to be so rude, but I think that's his strategy. As for Kyle being so focussed on looks - for crying out loud, he works on the radio where you can't even see anyone. As the saying goes, Kyle's got a good face for radio. He thinks he is so in touch with what the public want, yet he said 'no' to Damien....he's also a total hypocrit and is constantly going back on his word, especially bagging someone completely and then jumping on the band wagon to gush about them the following week. I mean, really. And all that name dropping. I bet Robby Williams and all the other people he brought up in the series would be saying "Kyle who?". What a tosser.

Hi, folks Have read all the comments totally agree with you all. It only shows Mark & Kyle being ill mannered. Let's put it this way, their comments really is a description of themselves rather than Damo. He is such a nice bloke, If it happened to me I would have burst into tears. Anyway, Dicko is back on Idol.He is much more diplomatic . Management should sack Kyle. Bring on Dicko!!!!

Has anyone watched the Rockstar series on Foxtel (INXS & Supernova)? On there the judges are the band members and Dave Navarro. Rock stars are not known for tact and diplomacy - but throughout both series the judges were nothing but supportive towards the competitors. They gave constructive criticism where it was needed and heaps of praise. There was no gushing - or favouritism. No offensive or tasteless remarks.
I wish the judging panel was like that on Idol. It was so much more pleasurable to watch.

I watched all of the top12 auditions last night again, and was still incensed by Mark's comments to Damien. Mark literally salivated over Dean, and his audition was good, but the contrast between the two reactions was very striking!
Damien responded beautifully in the audition, despite being taken aback by the response from the judges! As Damien himself said in his audition, "sometimes beauty does come from ugliness, haven't you ever heard of the ugly duckling!!"
Damien if you were the ugly duckling then, you have proven yourself to now be a mighty beautiful swan!!!!
