I think you are both on to something here, guys. The whole Idol phenomena began as "UK POP Idol", if I recall,, which definitely has Dean-like connotations, but real ARTISTS are changing that. Damien, without question is one. It says a lot about how the voting public see the show as a TALENT competition now. I feel also, that Mark actually fought for Damien to be in the comp, strange as it may seem, after his inexcusable rudeness, and was obviously delighted he won. When he leaned over to speak to Kyle afer the announcement I reckon he was saying "see, I told ya so!!!".

and as James M said at the Grand Finale: "Mark was right - you CAN win this thing Damien!". Who knows where it's going to go now that Damien has won and has contributed so much to the show. I often wonder how other musicians like Bernard Fanning and Pete Murray will take to him being on the circuit. Will they respect his talent or diss him for coming through idol? Surely they've all done it the hard way as well...Like, I think forward to when Damien's going to win the highest selling record at next year's Arias - how will he be treated? Particularly after Midnight Oil's comments at this year's show.

Particularly after Midnight Oil's comments at this year's show. Been thinking about this a lot over the last couple of months. The stigma of Australian Idol is massive, and will be near-impossible to overcome I think. Musical snobbery is pretty rife and pervasive (and I will put myself in that bracket - if someone had suggested to me this time last year that I would be eagerly awaiting the release of the 06 Idol's new album, I would've suggested they seek psychiatric help and thrown in a few disparaging remarks about the 'Idol Machine'). It will be a long hard road for Damien if he's going to overcome it. I heard a really good interview with Guy Sebastian about the Idol stigma. Guy had more or less resigned himself to the whole thing. Maybe what D needs is a few 'champions' in the Australian music industry outside of the pop genre. I suppose fellow Sony BMG artists would be obvious candidates. And I think original albums are a must to earn respect.

Damien's artistic cred should go a long way in silencing the knockers. So much depends on how much creative control Sony give him, which I have worried about from the beginning. However, D is no wilting violet and is probably pushing for as much input as possible. He has his contract to consider, however, I feel that Sony must be listening to the public who are voting with their wallets and not buying crap machine-produced product from past Idol winners, so they are attempting to lift their game, hence the longer recording time. This was supposed to be the year of the singer/songwriter and thank the lord it was!!

I think that possibly having a fistful of songs already, both tunes and lyrics, will be a good start. Maybe being a fraction older may help too as he has a certain level of composure and confidence. Agree he will have to work very hard indeed to win the music snobs over, but the fact that he's not gushy and he's very clever might give him some airtime over a few beers at the record company bashes. My brother is a musician who has followed a similar path to Damo (without winning idol obviously, but gigging for 15 years, sending off demos etc etc etc) and he has great respect for him, as do all his muso mates. They all watched idol in the last few weeks after hearing about Damo on the grapevine...Fingers crossed, eh?

Kyle can't talk he should look at himself in the mirror. I don't see what his lady sees in him. The reason he prob said no to Damien in the first place was prob jealously. At least mark knew that Damien had the talent to win and said so on a number of occasions even though he said that he was butt ugly. He never was butt ugly he was and always will be one gorgeous man
