Singer-Songwriter, Age 35
Dancing for: Barnardos

"Family and my kids are everything to me. I always say it and mean it, I would drop everything if I thought they were going to be affected in any way whatsoever by what I do. Nothing is worth it."
Born and raised in Ireland, Damien could not have predicted the incredible journey that awaited him when he made the move to Australia in 2003. Within three years of reaching our shores, Damien’s world changed dramatically when he swapped his chemist’s coat for his guitar to audition for Australian Idol. Damien went on to the win the series and since 2006, he has released four successful albums, including the ARIA award-winning and Number 1 chart release, "The Winner’s Journey".
Aside from a brief period when he did Irish dancing as a young boy, Damien has not danced on stage. "My guitar is my safety net, I hold on to that. The one week I danced on Australian Idol the judges said it was the worst thing they have ever seen on TV!" he says.
Always one to take on a new challenge, Damien has always wanted to learn to dance and has been an avid viewer of Dancing With The Stars. "I’ve always wanted to learn going right back to when I was a kid," he says. "I’ve watched every single year. It looks like a lot of fun, dancing could be a new element to my shows."
Damien’s musical talents have resulted in four Number 1 ARIA Chart Awards, a Helpmann Award, a MTV Award nomination and a busy touring schedule. In 2010, Damien supported fellow countryman Ronan Keating and Tina Arena at their ‘A Day On The Green’ winery shows. He also performed in over 75 of his own shows when he took the ‘Keys & Strings 2010 Tour’ around the country.
A gifted and accomplished fiction writer, last year Damien also released his second novel, Remember June, telling the story of a family who escaped the troubles of Northern Ireland.
Damien lives in Sydney with his wife, Eileen, and his three children, sons Jagger and Jarvis and daughter, Kikki Bo. A passionate family man, Damien is an Ambassador for the Barnardos Mother of the Year Awards and has chosen to dance for the charity. "Barnardos makes sure that kids have a childhood," he says.
In addition to appearing on Dancing With The Stars, 2011 will also mark the release of Damien’s new album "Roy – A Tribute to Roy Orbison". The album was recorded in Nashville, Los Angeles and Sydney with Roy Orbison’s widow and CEO of Orbison Music, Barbara Orbinson, as Executive Producer. "I did a Roy Orbison song on Idol and Roy’s widow, Barb got in touch. She said she loved my performance and last year she got in touch again. This was a unique opportunity," explains Damien.
