I love "In Dreams" and agree with you that it's the most "Idol-like" of D's performances on "Roy".. however, I wouldn't describe it as having "vocal gymnastics" which implies excessive trilling and superfluous notes, to me. I would describe it as utilising Damien's range and emotional qualities to the fullest, combined with a simple yet gorgeous arrangement, without unnecessary instrumentation to detract from his vocals. The simple string accompaniment is just lovely! This is definitely the kind of emotive performance we all fell in love with originally. It's very clinical, in my opinion. That's not bad, but it is very clinical and controlled. Well, it looks like we'll have to agree to disagree about it being "clinical". I think it's an excllent vocal performance, with great technique, but still highly emotional.

I've got some favourites but it really depends which mood I'm in and what I'm on my way to doing! Usually I'm in my car and it's really late like midnight and I'm on my way home... well there's one favourite song I play a few times at full blast - makes the 1 hour trip so much quicker somehow! Besides I Drove all Night, I also love playing (in no particular order): In Dreams (Loudly) Dream Baby (quite loud) Blue Bayou (LOUD! and the wind blowing in my hair!) She's a Mystery to Me (Loud) Handle With Care (it's fun) ....(no wonder the kids say I'm going deaf but at least I wind the windows down to spread the luuuurve (and decibels ) The top ones are currently getting very high repetition as a first choice - more than these below... BUT I love it when these ones pop up when I just let the player go on either random or in order on the cd. I'll even repeat them if I get distracted from listening to a song and realise I've missed parts Lol I like complete experiences You Got It Oh Pretty Woman Crying Love Hurts It's Over

That's exactly what I do Nuffy!! Play it twice if I'm really loving it Play it again if I have been distracted by my driving and the opening lines to WORKING FOR THE MAN, well sometimes I will play that bit over about 4 times on full volume before I actually listen to the song.

My local Sanity store has Damien at #1 and a display arrangement of around 8 ROY albums (2 rows of 4). I was impressed and told them so. The sales girl said it was a fantastic album!

I’ve been meaning to add my two cents worth about Roy, and now seems as random a time as any...everyone else seems totally caught up in some dance contest so somebody has to focus on the music... To me Roy is a 100% improvement on Catch The Wind, which I always found uninspired and boring. I still like Damien singing originals better and Remember June remains one of my favourite albums by anyone, but I guess if you gotta do covers then Roy is how to do them... Damien’s vocals, which are of course the main game here, have never sounded better, but judging on the comments here I’m not going to startle anybody with that statement. Sometimes I am reminded of Nessum Dorma way back on Idol –some of the vocals on this album are vaguely operatic. No, that’s not quite what I mean but I can’t think of another way to put it. This is a much more coherent album than CTW (songs from one artist only probably helps!) and much more dynamically recorded and sung. There are very few missteps, and on the whole the battle for relevance that any covers album has is won. The excellent chart performance over the last few weeks reflects that. On to the tracks... Only the Lonely – A little insipid, surprisingly. Quite bland. “Nice”. I think starting the album with a rockier number like Oh, Pretty Woman would have been better. Crying – A little disappointing. Still a great song and Damien sings it so well, but let me explain. It’s not the best version Damien’s ever sung and he’s let down by the arrangement, which is a bit twee. Dream Baby – Good grief. Sometimes I like this and sometimes I press skip. Possibly should have been the hidden bonus track. Then again, at least it’s different. I have no other comment. Oh, Pretty Woman – Brilliant. It has some guts. The horns are brilliant, the start grabs you and the song just keeps on ripping along. This song works really well on my gym playlist on the ipod when I’m on the treadmill, but you probably didn’t need to know that. In Dreams – Outstanding. The most “Idol” like performance, not that there’s anything wrong with that. Fantastic vocal range. Blue Bayou (Feat. The McClymonts) – Nice. Coming soon to an elevator near you. A tad harsh perhaps but never mind. I Drove All Night – Excellent. Great vocal and good instrumentation. It rocks and Damien’s voice soars. Handle with Care – Excellent. I have always liked this song. I used to play the original endlessly back in the 80s (on vinyl, no less!) I can see why one review said it was dangerously close to karaoke. Other than using 21st century recording equipment there’s not a lot changed from the Wilbury’s version. Only one other thing to say...Bobby! You Got It – Again excellent although again I can see why one review said it was dangerously close to karaoke. They really really should have lost the Jeff Lynne harmonies if they didn’t want the karaoke comparison. She’s a Mystery to Me – Good. Running Scared, listening indifferently. It’s Over – I have always loved this song. Damien does a great job but I would have liked to have seen the song extended. I always feel like there should be more, and did with the original too. Love Hurts – A little too Catch The Wind, if you know what I mean. Doesn’t stand out. Working for the Man – a good finish. Nice way to begin the song and then keeps up a nice momentum. So there you go, for me not exery track is a stand out but at the core of the album are some top quality songs sung by a vacalist on top of his game. And last but not least, finally a post on here without a single squeeeeeeeeee. Oh wait, I just typed...er...oh, never mind.

Thanks for your review, ODT. It's always nice to read a male's POV. I bet you were secretly squeeing on the inside.

Sorry, Trilly doesn't know me at all, so please don't think she does. I'm also a little curious as to why my review "needs a reply" anyway. This is a fan site where we can post our opinions, right? Is it really a crime not to squeeeee about everything?
Also, why only Trilly? I would have thought anyone's opinion as to what they do or don't agree with in my review is equally valid?

Not to mention, who actually cares what I think anyway? Good grief, I barely care, myself! It's just my own opinion.

Actually, I care ODT. It is really good to get different points of view on this forum so I hope you continue to voice yours. I find it great to have the opportunity to be able to voice some valid dissent without any of the nasty one-eyed stuff you get in other forums with fans ganging up on someone who dares say anything against their norm. After all, we're all fans and not "Yes-men" (or women). If Damien or Sony read this - great! They can take it on board as the honest feed-back from people who care and who are not trolls out to be malicious. Although not with all, I do agree with many of your comments on what you thought were the stronger and more appealing songs and which were not. My favourites change on a daily basis but up there are I Drove All Night, In Dreams and surprisingly You Got IT -- if only that annoying insurance TV ad didn't keep popping into my head at the end of the song Lol The songs I tend to skip are the ones you mentioned... I reallly would rather that they didn't use "Only the Lonely" so much in the promos. The video didn't do much for me either. Agree that " Oh, Pretty Woman" is much better - I like the gutsy ones - whether they're the plaintive or "woohoo! I'm in luuuurve!!" kind of way Just how it makes me feel. Running Scared bothers me but I love the beginning especially of It's Over... similar themes? and agree with Crying... I tried to like it but it doesn't make me feel as excited as I was hoping. Still well sung - but I can just take it or leave it. But wearing me down to climb up my favourites scale are Blue Bayou, Handle With Care and Love Hurts... definitely doing more repeats with those three
