Most of you will know that Damien is a Special Ambassador for the Special Olympics Australia organisation. The members of Damien Leith Online are very enthusiastic about supporting his role with the SO and already this year the forum raised $1930 for the Special Olympics to celebrate Damien’s birthday on January 18th. You can read about that here.
Another wonderful event is coming up soon - the SO’s Annual Gala Dinner!
This will be held in Sydney on FRIDAY MAY 18th, 2007.
Monica Smith, our lovely contact at the Special Olympics Australia, is about to have a baby and has just commenced her maternity leave. Congratulations Monica! Before leaving Monica referred me to her associate Karen Lahood who will be our point of contact with the SO while she is away. I had a lovely chat with Karen today regarding the gala event and on her behalf would like to extend her invitation to you all to attend!

On 18 May 2007, Special Olympics Australia will host our annual Gala Dinner. This year, funds raised will be used to support the Australian team travelling to the Special Olympics World Summer Games in China in October. The Games will be the largest sporting event in the world in 2007 and 10,000 athletes from around the world are expected to compete.
Please show your support for the team and join us for a great night of entertainment!
It was originally hoped that Damien would be on the entertainment bill for the evening - however looking at the dates you can see that little Bump is due to be born very close to that time, so this year Damien has not been booked to contribute to the evening’s entertainment. It's important to note that if you are considering attending, however, it’s hoped that the forum will still enjoy participating and contributing to the event!
There are 2 ways to do this.
By purchasing a ticket and coming along to a fabulous night of entertainment and dinner or, as suggested today by Karen, volunteering for the evening which will be a great contribution!

If you wish to attend the evening with members from the forum,
1. Please download the order form here and fill in your details and return to the address provided.

Karen and I had a chat about it and as Damien is not booked to be part of the entertainment this year and this is the first year for the forum to attened, we won’t pre-book a table for 10 for the forum this time.
- however Karen will seat all of us from the forum together at the same table (or between tables if we have more than 10 coming along ) as long as she knows we are from here and book within the next 2 weeks).
2. When booking your ticket, - please write “Damien Leith Online Member” in the Company Name part of the form - then Karen will know to put us all together. Or alternatively if you phone in your order, please let her know you are a member here.
3. In addition - please PM me if you attending as I will be coordinating the list with Karen to keep track of the names from here. There is also a thread here in the private Organiser Forum where those attending can discuss meet-up plans etc. (This is a password protected forum, if you don't have the password please contact me or one of the mods)
4. To enable the forum members to sit together and ensure your tickets - please try to send off your order forms within the next 2 weeks. Don’t forget to tell Karen you are from here, and please also PM me.
VOLUNTEERING FOR THE EVENING:
Some of you may wish to offer your services to help the Special Olympics Australia host this gala event. Karen was saying how there are quite a few roles and that if you wished to help it would be greatly appreciated!
Karen would love to hear from you if you would like to volunteer your services for the evening in the following ways:
a. To CHAPERONE THE ATHLETES (some will require assistance at the event)
b. To MEET AND GREET GUESTS
c. To help look after the PRIZE TABLES
d. To help with the SILENT AUCTION & RAFFLES
Karen has requested that you must be at least 20 YEARS of age if you wish to apply to volunteer for the evening.
If you wish to volunteer for the evening:

OTHER WAYS TO HELP:
Currently there is a planning thread in the Secret Plans forum to discuss fundraising ideas for the Special Olympics. As the plans become more solid, public threads will be created for them, but if you’d like to contribute your ideas at the planning stages, please visit the forum here:

Today, Karen also indicated that a really great assistance would be anyone who could volunteer their services to help the SO input their Database information.

FUN RUNS / SPONSORED WALKS:
Karen has also suggested that she'd love to see some programmes get going where people could enter fun runs or walks (like the City to Surf) in their local area and raise sponsorship money for themselves which could be donated to the SO. She is currently organising letterheads and forms and maybe even t-shirts for people to wear who may wish to do this.
So, please keep this one in mind, and if you know of a fun run in your area soon you would like to enter and donate your run for the SO, please be in touch with Karen on

WORKPLACE GIVING:
Monica wrote me a note recently with this info:
We are currently in the process of starting a workplace giving program, in the next couple of weeks, there will be information put on our website on how companies can start a workplace giving program for Special Olympics, if you can inform your members about Workplace Giving or if they think their company would be interested, we can organise for someone to come out and speak to them or they can go to the Australian Charities Fund website and inquire about the program (usually for companies over 200 employees) www.australiancharitiesfund.org.au
This will be an excellent fundraiser for those of you working for companies who may be able to incorporate the idea. Monica particularly wished to point out how much this type of giving really helps as it provides a regular contribution the SO can include with their budgeting. There are many exciting events coming up with the Special Olympics. I hope quite a few from the forum will attend the Gala evening - and in September there will be a big Spring Race Day at Rosehill Racecourse to look forward to as well!

I don't know if I'm too young to attend either. I can not volenteer and fun runs and stuff like that don't really happen here do they Emmy?? (I'm confised) I hope to contribute some other way though.
