Braffy - an email!
Do tell
I am still barely functioning after a very long week, lol, being a Damienite is wearing me out, ha ha!
Haven't got piccies ready just yet but will put them up before too long. Have to work again tonight, so making just a quick visit, it's a busy time of year in the studio.
Soooooo - all about the Carols! Braffy from what you said we may well have been close, because I have a disappointing tale regarding people around me too
Anyway - we were lucky on the night to have a fairly easy trip in and walked up Macquarie St to reach the Domain - it was the first Carols for both me and my bf, so we were pretty excited and the view as the bowl opened up before us was beautiful!!
We walked in from the back and strolled around for a bit to get our bearings, then walked up to the side of the stage - they have big walkways and I was impressed that they were flowing freely, not what I expected at all!
We saw Guy Sebastian singing from the side of the stage and saw all the snow falling on him, lol, then decided it was time to go find a spot to settle in.
We made our way back up the hill and along the walkways and ended up in the middle about 3/4 of the way back.
It was quite a long way back but the musical sound was excellent! We couldn't really hear the announcers very well so most of the time didn't really know who was on stage.
Anyway we picked a spot which seemed just couples and families and were happily setting up the picnic rug when the people beside us we thought were a couple were joined by all their drunken mates
I was getting a bit testy about all their noise but was busy going through the exciting bag of goodies you get with the candles and we were also searching the bag for the candle holders! More time went by as we tried to figure out how to put the said candle-holders together in the dark, lol but we got there - just in time for the 'party people' to kick a blow up ball onto our rug. Guy other side of us gave them a dirty look, then we started to listen.
Ahhhh - my favourite carol, "Silent Night" - and there beside me the party people were raving on about football and swearing.
Just killed it - the people around us didn't seem to know any words either and weren't singing.
Then behind us a guy who *must* have had tourettes started launching into the longest most explicit tirade of expletives I've ever heard. People around us were getting upset. I got the impression we were near one of the beverage tents because people seemed drunk behind us.
Soooooooo - was getting very uncomfortable by now but then they announced DAMIEN!
Biggest cheer from the crowd and even expletive dude shut up.
Damien came bouncing down the stairs, and started singing - beautiful sound!! Naturally someone in front stood up in my line of sight but I got some nice piccies anyway. Then idiot party dude started going, 'ohhhh he's doing Jeff Buckley, no one can do Jeff Buckley but Jeff Buckley blah blah blah....."
I was tempted by this point to tell him to put a cork in it, but didn't want to waste the precious time seeing Damien by brawling in the Domain, lol, and anyway the headline "Damienite in Carols Incident" wouldn't be the nicest thing to see, lol.
So, I drew on my 'inner patience' - tuned out the party people and swayed with the nice people around us to Damien!
By the end we were having fun with those around us, taking pics etc, and then after the 1st fireworks a lot of people thought it was over and left, so we moved forward quite a way. MUCH BETTER CROWD in this spot, all families and happy young teenagers dancing in reindeer antlers. So for the finale we had a great atmosphere
Then we saw Damien bopping away (thank you for wearing a light jacket!! So easy to see on stage!) and he looked like he was having the greatest time up there
Jingle Bells laughing all the way, then hugs with BF and watching fireworks, ahhhh - then it was all over!
But one of the sweetest moments of the night happened then! There were tons of tourists there, and a bunch of Swedish male tourists just next to us spontaneously burst into a choir-like rendition of "Silent Night" - obviously caught up in the moment! It was beautiful and made up for the other version which had been spoiled.
So, with the stunning views of the candles, stage and the floodlit spires of St Mary's in the background we said farewell to the Carols for this year and would love to go again - but next time will be sure to sit in the middle of a family section!!!
