Carla those are my favs too, I'll add Blowin in the wind to my list too. ;D I just love having the Album on in the background while I do things around the place. It's such easy listening music and can be turned up loud for maximum effect or down low for that soothing background music. Either way is great.

YAY we have the same faves! I must admit, I am not really a Bob Dylan fan... (I am really really sorry Damien)...however, I do agree he has some fantastic lyrics but I have never been much of a fan. Which is kinda weird when you consider one of my boys is named Dylan! My parents were not musical and I was born in 1970 and I am guessing Bob Dylan was big in the 70's when I was not as influenced by music. I love 70's music nowdays but in my family, it was more like Carole King, Boz Scaggs, Jackson 5 and ABBA! Carla those are my favs too, I'll add Blowin in the wind to my list too. ;D I just love having the Album on in the background while I do things around the place. Carla, I think in that Woman's Day article Damien also said he doesn't like Bob Dylan, but he likes his lyrics. Unless he was only talking about when he was younger, and he actually likes him now.

Same about Bob Dylan, Carla. I even have trouble listening to Damien's version of The Times They Are A'Changin. I hate Bob Dylan's stupid grammar! It's always a'something. Damien's exact words were "a crap singer" Although he actually put on a bit of a "Dylan Whine" on 'The Times". Not cool. Damien should never lower himself to that kind of "singing". [/rant] An art teacher I had once used to play Dylan in class and I used to sit near the cd player; let's just say a massive amount of self control stopped me from tearing the player out of the wall. I can't be too hard on that teacher. She formally introduced me to the music of Crowded House, so it was worth sitting through the Dylan just for that

On Neighbours, someone goes to Dean Geyer's character (Ty): "Don't your family know how talented you are?" and then he replied: "No, they can't recognise talent. They don't even think Bob Dylan's talented." What good taste Ty's family has, lol.

Are you people serious?? Dylan is a crap singer, but man, the songs! The guy helped change popular music and when he "went electric" it was a huge moment - protest music crossed over into rock. Just being able to hold a note does not a great pop/rock/folk singer make. For a prime example look at Chris Isaak - great voice but nothing to say leaves him well down the list of rock greats. You have to have something to say as well (more than just "I wuuuve you" in a hundred different ways) - that's why I was so pleased to hear that Damien is expanding his horizons and writing about the outside world. The Dylan songs and Universal Soldier are to me the best things on the CTW album because they are political.

I've never heard Dylan's versions of the songs (I don't think) so I have no idea what they're like. But I'm sure Damien's are better, cos Damien is awesome.

Each to their own ODT. I am not a big fan. I never said I didn't like his lyrics...infact, I do. I am just not a big fan myself. It's about personal taste...it doesn't make my opinion wrong, just different Are you people serious?? Dylan is a crap singer, but man, the songs! It's official! Damien thinks Bob Dylan is a crap singer! Official consensus: "It tore through my ears." Trust me Spud, you don't want to hear Dylan's version. Get the Peter Paul and Mary version of Blowin in the Wind, or Joan Bayers if she has one (I think she does). Bob Dylan doesn't sing, he moans and whines and growls, but he can't sing. Anyone who rips a strip off Bob Dylan is a friend of mine - Billy Joel hilariously said he looked like a 'quadrapledic' in his harmonica neck brace, and now Damien joins the club. He seemed kinda glad to admit he doesn't like it, and it totally made my day to hear it confirmed in person ;D As for songwriting, I think Bob Dylan is a bit pretentious. He certainly fancied himself a poet, and you can't have poetry without a dash of pretension. As for Chris Isaak, his songs are about the simple, everyday, flawed unlucky-in-love man and have a depth of their own, as well as being musically catchy and entertaining. And he hung out with Roy Orbison, one of the greatest lyricists of all time. Not to mention he has a great set of pipes - I'd take Let's Have a Party over The Hurricane any time All a matter of taste, ODT. Either you think Dylan is a god, or you can't stand him. And I absolutely can't stand him

The Dylan songs and Universal Soldier are to me the best things on the CTW album because they are political. He may be famous for political statements, but funnily enough, of all his songs, my favourite Bob Dylan song has nothing to do with politics and is a love song - "Make You Feel My Love" - its not Dylan's version I like either, but the version Luka Bloom did of it, with such warmth in his voice! I don't think it's at all necessary for great writing to make a particular statement - no matter what the subject, be it love, loss, the inner or the outer world - if it is beautifully written as well as sincere/honest and from the depths of what the writer is feeling, I believe that is what tends to make a song or piece of writing timeless.
