Hi! Many of us have seen this (click on image to enlarge) from D's MySpace. YUM! I thought it might be fun to begin a discussion about the new originals album and where we see it heading, what we're hoping for and what we think we know from D's teasers, etc. I for one am incredibly excited about it. and can't wait for it to arrive. The direction D has been hinting at lately is very much in the vein I would like to hear from him..folk rock. Definitely one of my fave genres of music. ;D He also mentioned that it might contain some John Mayer-esque chord structures, which has my blood pumping hard too! I LOVE JM's guitarwork, which is heavily influenced by my all time fave guitarist, Eric Clapton. Woohoo!! If anyone else remembers other hints we've had, please, fire away!

I know nothing about the new album, as I've had my head in the sand (or some might say up my a**) for a while now But my wish list would be: Songs written from the heart Songs not written with radio in mind (Hi Sony! ) Songs that are brave No covers! Well ok, maybe one cover...but it would have to be completely left of centre for Damien, and sound nothing like the original (sort of like Patti Smith doing 'Smells Like Teen Spirit')...

'bout time we had a thread on this I want 'teh POWER!' now that would pump my blood I'd love an album that sounded like D does when he sings in concert. He gives it his ALL! and those power notes he hits are amazing. On CD however, I haven't really heard that yet. So I'm hoping that a few songs really make the hair on the back of my neck stand to attention. D said the album would be 'Rockier' so I'm hoping for that. Also that the lyrics are more generalised? I think that's what he meant. edit. By the way that Photo is GORGEOUS! I just love it. 2009 can't come quick enough.

Winter, I can't be 100% sure, but I am 99% sure this album will not contain any covers... which is extremely good news to my ears!
I like your wishlist. ;D
However, if there is a song which gets airplay, because it's too damned good NOT to, I won't be disappointed! Of course, I'd love it if D's originals took him to even wider acclaim and recognition. Critical acclaim would be my first wish for him though.

oow yes, Braff "edgier" really excites and pleases me too. Winter, I'm hoping that "edgy" means brave, both lyrically and musically, that D takes us somewhere we have never been with him before. He has said that lyrically he is broadening his scope, away somewhat from the introspection of Where We Land into a more story-telling style. No matter where he does lead us in the end, I'm absolutely loving the idea of hearing the POWER in his voice on a track or two as well, Rox and Smiley. I can hardly wait to hear him LET RIP with some rocky, electric guitars and keyboards behind him!! Gawd, when he does songs like Never Tear Us Apart at a gig I go NUTS!!

The two songs that we have heard at the concerts "Goodnight" and the other one I always forget the name of... are the slower/ballady type song. Damien mentioned that the other songs he is considering for his album are more rocky than those. That being said, these are really good songs, I particularly like the one I can't remember the name of (don't know why I have a block there!!) I'm hoping for songs that can be released as singles. I want the whole of Australia to celebrate Damien's music as much as we do, so he can get past the Idol tag (and sell lots of records and make lots of money!!) I'm still hoping for a number of ARIA awards next year!! However to be popular on the singles chart, you probably need to appeal to the 12 to 25 demographic, so I'm hoping that this will happen for Damien. There have been a few slightly different popular songs around lately, ie: Sweet About Me; I'm Yours; Bubbly. I know Damien can do it, what do the rest of you think? BY the way LOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that photo!! If that's the direction the cover is heading in.......

Personally, Tina I don't want D to be thinking about a particular demographic. If Kyle won't play his music, I won't lose any sleep! I want him to release great music that is truly himself and where he wants to be. If that music happens to also appeal to a younger market than previously, brilliant!! and look out ARIAs!! ;D

The one you can't remember Tina, is either There For You or I'll be There For You..we aren't completely sure. We all haven't heard them yet, so it makes discussion of them problematic. Loving the highkey greyscale shot which focusses on his gorgeous eyes too! Really appeals to me. ;D What a surprise!

That's right Trilly, There for You - beautiful song!! Would love to hear it again!! I agree with you Trilly regarding not aiming his music towards a particular demographic, but I would love to see Damien have commercial success (on a big scale!). However, I know there is no point aiming your songs or songwriting towards that. I just hope it happens for him, because he has written beautiful songs from the heart!
