Sold out that's fantastic, but not surprising because he's so talented.

So happy for D he's bringing his musical play to a wider audience. Have a great time, Sydneysiders. I'm really looking forward to this experience in Melbourne. It happily coincides with other family commitments, so there's no way I'd miss it!

No, Brian. I haven't been to this theatre before. Hopefully I can find out on Saturday night.
It is definitely SOLD OUT. One of our Members rang the venue to try and get 1 ticket and was told there were absolutely NO tickets left.

I really hope many of you will get to see this wonderful play! I've been excited to see it one day since the Adelaide festival as we'd all heard how good it was and it was just fantastic! The story of The Parting Glass is going to bounce around in my head for some time, I' d love to see Damien write and do more of this sort of piece. Loved hearing the many gorgeous songs he performed with the band, some like Wicked Game it's been so long since I've heard and it sounded so good to hear again. It was a beautiful play and so intriguing seeing the way Damien switched instantly into his onstage music persona to acting as the people beside the stage chatting about the band. It seemed like seeing his Irish self since they were performing as a band playing in Ireland. I wasn't sure half the time if we were watching Damien playing himself or he was really being himself as we know him from other shows, it was like watching him winding in and out into his characters like an Escher maze. Anyway IT WAS FABULOUS so I suppose that's the main point of it all! I was amazed by how it seemed so natural the way Damien changed from the father to the son character during a conversation, even though it's all him. It's very believable and you can easily be drawn into the story which was very funny and also very emotional. By the end I was finding it overwhelmingly moving and I think many would have been in tears. There were some utterly beautiful moments, wow I wish this was taped so we could see it again, no recording was allowed at the venue so we couldn't take any videos or pics. I really loved Black is the Colour of My True Love's Hair and Red is the Rose, was so lovely to see Damien do these live. Raglan Road is one of my all time favourite songs and Damien's version is now the definitive one for me, as well as his version of Wicked Game. Hadn't seen Damien perform Raglan Road for five years since the Brass Monkey, cannot believe that's even possible it's that long ago! It was magical to hear him sing it again, what a song, what a poem. Was so brilliant to see how much of the song comes back into the play as well. There's so much to the actual story I want to think about in relation to the songs now, and how the emotional story of the play builds through the conversation then the songs. It's really takes you by surprise as it's quite lighthearted to start with but by the end just so incredibly moving. There were some favourite faces in the band - Eric Aranda, Chris Alford, Kevin Kelly on bodhran and a lovely young guy on the uilleann pipes who also doubled up as the bartender in the play. A beautiful young girl was also in the band and she sung one song as a duet with Damien. I didn't catch her name unfortunately but she was very good and also played the violin. So glad that we braved the wilds of the Western Plains and made it to Penrith to see this show. It was quite an expedition, with unusual sights (P nearly made a detour when he spotted the Hooters sign on Mulgoa Road ). We saw the much famed Panthers World of Entertainment and I was curious to have a look in there but we were short of time so we grabbed a quick bite at the eateries in Riley street. It was so hot out there it pulled the air out of my eyeballs , but apart from that it was an enjoyable adventure and the cooler evening air was pleasant for strolling back to the theatre for the show. Being a play I wasn't sure we'd see Damien after but he did come out and say hello so that was fantastic and it was great to be able to let him know in person how much we enjoyed it. Damien mentioned that it is slightly different in how the play is arranged than Adelaide so if any of you have seen the original you will see the changes, he was saying the music with the conversation parts is arranged differently. I loved how the music kept tying back into the story of what was going on. And so since he was someone else at the time (... ) , I should add then that I would quite fancy that lead singer of that Black Velvet Band... of Hawtness! Wow how good did that guy (what was his name???) look all in black w black vest! Just our sort of Irish rock star. Hope he tours here someday It really was eye-opening to see Damien acting, when he was right into the other characters there were some truly heartbreaking moments and while we were totally drawn into it I thought he became absorbed by it too which was probably why it translated so emotionally. Particularly as the young man explaining something that happened at the end, I found myself gasping my hand over my mouth a couple of times and gripping the seat as you do when you're watching a movie because the drama was building so much and the pull of the music with what was going on was incredibly emotional. It was a fabulous night and a really beautiful play. By now it's the 18th so wishing a VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY to our lovely Damien and I hope this year brings you all the best and that you'll keep writing wonderful pieces like this!

THis play is really worth seeing if you have the chance.
We won't tell you the storyline. Well done to Damien.
Damien was wearing black, black and a bit more black.
The Black Velvet band consisted of Eric, Chris, Kevin, Jess and Adrian.
I am withholding the setlist so as not to spoil it for those going to the Melbourne show but SOME of the songs Rocky Road to Dublin, Wicked Game, Hallelujah, The Parting Glass and Danny Boy.
Congratulations to Damien on a fantastic job.
