Hmmm, that's interesting. Didn't Damien say 11 of the 12 songs on the album were written by him, or something like that? This must be #12.
As much as I know and you all know Damien turns everything he sings into something magic, something uniquely their own, I don't think a cover would be wise for his next single. If non-Idol-fans hear it is a cover, they'll go "pfft, another Idol. Another karaoke singer". And I don't want Damien to be given that tag by any ignorant person, even if it's not true. He's waited 15 years to get his stuff out there, his first hit single was someone else's song; these professional songwriters should let him get one of his own songs out there, for god's sake!

Lots of quite credible singers record and release songs that have been written and recorded by other people but never really attracted attention. I don't think it would be a huge blow to Damien's reputation if he were to do it as well, especially with such an alternative-sounding song. It's not quite the same as covering a well-known song to me. It's a great song and he sings it brilliantly, and I would really like a recorded version of it. Having said that, I would love and much prefer for Damien to be able to release a song he had written himself, because he's good enough to do it - and as you said, Hyp, he's waited so long for this chance. But if he is completely happy with whatever happens, I will be happy. If he's not happy with the idea of releasing something that isn't his - I just hope the record company is listening to the real fans.  |

I must admit I too would be disapointed if the next single was to be a cover. Like most of us here, I think "Beautiful" has what it takes to be a huge hit....and its one of Damien's own. I would so like to see him to disprove some of that often quoted criticism of Idol stars that they can only sing covers....because we know he is a fabulous songwriter and - no matter how beautifully he can do covers - deserves to also have those writing skills recognised AND receive the lovely royalties for them!!
So...I must say that no matterhow lovely 22 steps is....if its the single, personally, I will be disapointed. It won't stop me buying it...but still....

After re-watching the "Night of my Life" special and noting the emphasis that was put on on the fact that the idols were being encouraged to write or co-write their songs I think it would be a backward step if Damien's first single from the album was a cover.
I have lots of faith in Damien's songwriting ability so I would prefer an original as the first single. 22 Steps could be either be the 2nd single or the B side of the first.

Damien's version of this song is gorgeous, really showcases his vocal skills, so would be great. When I heard him sing it I just did not get the same vibe as I got from Beautiful, Come to Me or Sky.........it sort of makes sense to me now why I felt that way.
I think it was because these songs meant something to him, therefore they meant more to me too.
Damien is a superb songwriter and vocalist --- I would prefer a song by Damien -- but I have been listening to TWJ for months now and only a couple of songs are written by him, so I dont think I would have a problem with the release of 22 Steps as a single and would support it all the way.
But I must also say I woke this morning with "Beautiful" playing in my head..........

Yes, I think an original as first single would be the way to go, and then follow up with 22 Steps if Damien really wants to release it as a single too. On the other hand, what do we know?!

But as Damien posted he really doesn't mind if 22 Steps turns out to be the single as he gets it and enjoys singing it as well. As to Beautiful I have only heard the mp3 copy and I would love to hear it in person  some day. |

I remember the first part of the second verse went something like, "If I were him I'd buy you that orange raincoat, the one that he forbade... and we'd go riding past his house..." ...Um, yeah. That was my favourite part. I totally wanted to run up on stage and glomp him after he sang those lines.  I wonder why that other guy forbade her to have an orange raincoat? Anyway, from the snippet I heard on the tv special, I loved hearing Damien sing this song and am happily awaiting which song he'll end up choosing for his first single post TWJ! Whatever he feels is the strongest way to go, am looking forward to what he's working on! |

Haha gj, I'd prefer it if he was 22 steps away from the door, but inside.
When I first heard that "orange raincoat" bit, I thought the lyrics sounded a bit "different", sort of like something Bobby would write. But I liked the way I couldn't tell that it wasn't an original when I heard it on NOML, that shows how good Damien is at singing songs in his own way.
Also, in the version of the song at the link from dede, when the guy sings "But just not yet..." it really sounds like a song Damien would sing well, so that's good. Plus, Damien said the song suits his voice. If he has to sing a cover, this one would be a good choice I reckon.
