I looked for it yesterday in KMart, Target and Angus & Robertson and didn't see it.

Astro I think you might know the answer to this question ;D
Are book sales similar to the music sales? in regards to their chart position. I just realised a few of us have brought it before the 1st October, will those early sales not go towards the book chart position? or is this different.

As far as I know, book sales count whenever they are purchased, but I don't actually know that. Book sales lists can be local (we do our own shop), national for the company (ie Dymocks or A&R) or go by the Neilsen bookscan, which as far as I know just takes total sales of a book. To be honest with you, I don't think Damien's book is going to make the best seller lists - you have to sell a lot to get there, and as I have said before, I think the pricing is going to discourage people who aren't looking specifically for his book.

I purchased the book for $28.00 at Angus & Robertson, the shop assistant told me they only recieved 14 copies, yesterday I saw it in K-Mart selling for $18.14, how can there be such a large price difference.

I was in the ACT for the weekend and I thought I'd look around for the book. After waiting half an hour at Borders for some service, they told me that they had the book but didnt have time to unpack it onto the shelves yet and that I should come back another day It was $28 dollars there also. I'll try again in Melbourne tomorrow.

It's on an introductory special price for a while at Borders for $19.95.

Is there any special protocol to help him on the bestsellers list? (since we usually help him in the music charts...not that he'll need help )

I'll explain the price difference for you. The recommended retail price is set by the publisher. They then sell the book to the book shops at a percentage of that price. Places like KMart and Big W sell the book at very little more than what they pay for it, using it as a loss leader and hoping that you will buy other stuff while you are in there. They only stock a limited range and there is no service there. Borders, which is a US company, often sells books at less than what they paid for it and write the loss off against the parent company. Borders is now closing all its overseas stores except Dubai and one other (Singapore?). Shops like Dymocks and A&R, which give service (people in Adelaide often complain about Borders service - if the book is in our shop, we will get it for you ) can't cut the price too much, as the shops are often individually owned and have to make some money in order to pay the staff ( ie me ;D) Any help??

And hyper, best sellers in the book trade are just those that sell the most. As far as I know, it doesn't matter where you buy the book from, although I might be wrong about that.

Thanks for the info, Kath. I've read it!! ;D and enjoyed it ! Bought it from A&R at full price..the manager said it's already selling well and he expects it to make the Top 10 list!!..He might have been just making me happy, though..I'm a good customer and he's a D fan. bwah! Will post my thoughts about it soon, when I have had time to digest it, but basically I found it a compelling narrative with characters I cared about..always a sign of good fiction. D can be proud! ;D

Since last week have been looking for 'One More Time' and as K-Mart was so pathetic with D's Album, I started there. None of the K-Marts have the novel, so I muttered something about having to go to Sydney K-Marts to get it , but didn't mean it. Went to Angus & Robertson and there they were on both sides of the shop. Was served by the senior lady who smiling informed me she met Damien Leith a few weeks ago ...he sat at her table and gave all the booksellers a talk AND sang 3 songs (now I understand why there were so many copies ). She said she's trying to get D to a book signing, but it's been hard.....so I told her he will be in Newcastle for the 16th November concert, maybe he could come then. She thanked me and took my name and ph. no. and will ring IF it gets organised.....I hope it is, I think she does too

I got my copy today. Walked into the bookshop and couldn't find it (although it was actually only about a metre away from where I was looking). So I asked the lady whether they had it and she was about to look it up then she realised she already knew and said "yes, we have a huge stack". So I guess that's a good thing - they ordered heaps and she also knew about the book so maybe it's popular. She said it used to be $28 but they reduced it to $25. Anyway I have it now but I've been busy so I've only read about a chapter in the car on the way home. I really like it so far. I wouldn't normally read a book like this - if I read the blurb I'd think it sounds political and psychological and would assume it's boring. But it's actually great so far. ;D Damien's widening my reading tastes.

Isn't it great who you meet in shops, too - just before Swoon City last time I went to buy myself a new scarf and got talking to the girl in the section and said I was going to a concert, and she asked who, and I said, "Damien Leith" and she said, "Ooooooooooh I LOVE him!!" - so I said, well there might be a few tickets left - come to the show too! ;D
